MILLVILLE – The Board of Education approved a three-year contract with the Millville Education Association on Monday night.

Board Administrator Bryce Kell said the agreement gives across-the-board pay increases of 2.9 percent in each year of the agreement. Year one of the agreement is retroactive, because the last MEA contract expired on June 30, 2015.

Kell said the MEA approved the agreement at a meeting at 5 p.m. Monday. The union primarily represents teachers, but teacher aides, cafeteria workers and secretaries also are members.

The vote was 8-0 in favor. Board member Robert Donato was absent. No member commented publicly on the agreement.

Kell said the current starting salary for a Millville teacher with a bachelor’s degree is $49,101. The starting annual salary will rise to $50,824 for the 2017-18 academic year under the terms of this contract, he said.

“There were some concessions in health care,” Kell said. “They went to a different (benefits) plan.”

Kell said the contract also puts a limit on tuition reimbursements.

All Millville members were allowed to vote despite technical conflicts of interest for at least five members. The board in December approved a waiver for conflicted members.

The school board vote followed a short closed session meeting to discuss the agreement.
