VINELAND – A 59-year-old city man was critically injured Sunday afternoon after he was struck by a car door in his driveway and knocked to the ground.

About 3:15 p.m., emergency crews were dispatched to the first block of Eastwood Drive, located off East Landis Avenue, for reports for a fall victim.

They arrived on scene to find Thomas P. Farnoly with life-threatening injuries, police said. Vineland firefighters set up a landing zone at Johnstone Elementary School and Farnoly was flown to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was listed in critical and unstable condition Sunday evening.

Investigators determined Farnoly had completed jumping the battery of his 1984 Chrysler LeBaron and was walking up to the driver’s side of the vehicle, where the door was open.

A family member, inside the vehicle, was moving from the driver’s side to the passenger seat when the vehicle shifted into reverse.

The open door of the moving LeBaron struck Farnoly, who fell to the ground.

The crash is being investigated by the Vineland Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
