VINELAND - A Vineland High School student, scheduled to transfer out of the local school district, was arrested Friday after prompting the evacuation of the north building, according to school officials.

At about noon, the 15-year-old student pulled the fire alarm reportedly as a last day at VHS prank, according to John Frangipani, assistant superintendent.

When the alarm sounded, VHS North was evacuated. Vineland firefighters responded to the school and were at the scene for about a half hour.

During the evacuation, texts traded between students with those in the south building as well as with their parents fanned a rumor that there was a gun at the school.

As a precaution, that was investigated and proved to be false information, Frangipani said. Students were returned to the north building to continue the school day.

The student, who school officials said was scheduled to transfer to Absegami High School next week, was charged with creating a false public alarm and then released to a parent/guardian.
