It's day one of the Democratic National Convention

Democratic presidential candidate former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Democratic vice presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) attend together a campaign rally on July 23, 2016 in Miami, Florida.

The week after a four-day GOP gathering in Cleveland that didn't exactly go always as planned, Democrats are hoping to kick off their convention in Philadelphia on Monday with a show of unity — you know, right after the announcement that their party chairwoman would resign over claims she and Democratic officials favored Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders. Speaking of favoring Clinton, The USA TODAY NETWORK interviewed scores of Clinton supporters, some in every state, for a more nuanced understanding of its denizens and their motives. #ClintonNation, our special report, looks at why they say, #ImWithHer.

German authorities probe blast near music festival

Investigators on Monday continue to probe a suicide bombing that left the attacker dead and at least 10 hurt in Ansbach, Germany. The attacker, a 27-year-old Syrian who was denied asylum, detonated the device at a wine bar after he was denied access to a music festival. It is unclear whether the attacker had any link to radical Islam or what his motives were, said Michael Schrotberger, spokesman for the prosecutor's office in Ansbach. The attack follows a deadly week in Germany: nine people died in a shooting rampage in Munich, and several were injured last week during an ax attack aboard a train in Wurzberg.

Baton Rouge to mourn another slain officer Monday

The city of Baton Rouge, La., continues to grieve for the three police officers who were fatally shot by a lone gunman on July 17. Funeral services will be held Monday for Montrell Jackson, 32, the third of the three officers to be honored after being slain in what police said was an ambush by Gavin Long, 29, of Kansas City. Long died in the ensuing gunfight with police. Services were held Friday for police officer Matthew Gerald, 41, and on Saturday for Baton Rouge sheriff's deputy Brad Garafola, 45. Long's attack came 12 days after Alton Sterling, a black man, was shot an killed during an altercation with two police officers, sparking protests in the community.

Reports: Verizon, Yahoo set to announce $5 billion deal

A deal for telecommunications giant Verizon to purchase Internet pioneer Yahoo could be announced as soon as Monday, according to reports. Bloomberg and The New York Times say the deal would approach $5 billion and would end Yahoo' status as an independent company. Verizon, scheduled to report financial results on Tuesday, has been the leading contender for Yahoo in a field of potential suitors that include AT&T, private equity firms and a group led by Quicken Loans co-founder Dan Gilbert, who has the backing of billionaire investor Warren Buffett's company, Berkshire Hathaway.

Heat wave continues to scorch U.S. in final day

Convention-goers, protesters and police will have to bring extra water Monday as the extreme heat wave that baked most of the United States over the weekend continues with some of its hottest temperatures in the Northeast. Temperatures spiked well over 100 degrees during the weekend, with only two states – Alaska and Washington – had temperatures below 90 degrees Friday. The hot spell isn't record-breaking in many areas, but for at least part of the USA it's a level of heat that hasn't been seen since the summer of 2012. While the heat wave is expected to cool off Monday night, the warmer-than-usual forecast will persist heading into August.
