County revives roadwork in Vineland, Millville, Bridgeton

Staff reports

BRIDGETON – Cumberland County officials have given the green light to jump-start road construction projects that Gov. Chris Christie abruptly halted after the state ran out of money.

Roadwork will resume soon in the following locations, according to the county:

  • Cedarville Road from Route 49 to Bogden Boulevard in Millville.
  • Lincoln Avenue from Main Road to Pennsylvania Avenue in Vineland.
  • Burlington Road from Buckshutem Road to Reeves Road in Bridgeton.
  • Old Deerfield Pike from Parsonage Road to Route 77 in Upper Deerfield.

“The county apologizes for the delays in construction as a result of state actions beyond our control,” Freeholder Jim Sauro said in a news release announcing the plans.

New Jersey’s Transportation Trust Fund is depleted, but the state’s Democratic-controlled Legislature and Republican governor have been unable to agree on a solution to pay for future roadwork.

On June 30, Christie issued an executive order that shut down most projects. On Aug. 17, he issued another directive for state officials to make funds available for “absolutely essential” road projects.

A day before the governor’s latest order, the Cumberland County Board of Freeholders unanimously approved an ordinance that authorized their engineer to restart partially constructed road projects in cases where the delay could cause safety issues.

“Schools will be in session soon and we have constituents whose quality of life is being impacted by the large potholes in the roadways,” Freeholder Jim Quinn said. “Not only are the walls in their homes shaking every time a vehicle hits one of those large voids, but also the safety of motoring public is a concern.  I am very pleased that the entire freeholder board agreed to make this a priority.”
